Owners Only is awarding one lucky ownership group with the inaugural ’Golden Nocs Award’.
Nominee Four: Boomtastic
“She is such a trier and never gives up,” said part-owner Ben Duncan who races Boomtastic with his mate of 20 years Todd Taylor, wife Jo Duncan and fellow friend Andrew Cairns.
“I bred and raced her mother Xaar Boom before sending her to the Hunter Valley to be served by Denman. This yearling was sold however only managed a couple of country wins- the next two foals both had injuries and never made it to the races.
“When Dad got Sessions to stand in WA, my wife Jo and I went back to the Lohnro link and thought it would be a good match despite the mare not having much luck with Denman.
“Simon Miller always wanted to train the mother and upon viewing Boomtastic as a yearling told us she was his type of horse so it was a no brainer to send her to him to train.
“Simon and Kelly Kinninmont are fantastic at what they do and their communication is outstanding,” said Ben.
Boomtastic was originally aimed towards the Karrakatta Plate but according to Simon needed more time in the paddock to mature.
“All her early work is done in a beach environment at Brendon Fitzgerald’s in Peppie Beach before arriving to Simon’s Ascot stable where his team add the spit and polish.
“Brendon and Nikki do such an amazing job with the horses and are responsible for getting Royal Strata back into the right headspace for Justin Warwick,” says Ben.
And according to the naming of the filly, this is the responsibility of Jo who names each horse the team own.
“She wanted to keep a reference to the dam and had another name picked out but it was already taken and Boomtastic popped into her head. It was available and so she was named!
“The win on Saturday was great and between us all we try and at least get two parties on track to watch each run,” says Ben.
Boomtastic is a winner of four races from 11 career starts with $143,160 in prizemoney earnings. The filly has earned an additional $127,230 in Westspeed earnings, proving how lucrative the incentive is to WA owners and breeders.
